NCAA penalizes Ohio State by banning use of “The” before...class="rtejustify"> COLUMBUS—The NCAA handed out its penalties in regards to the The Ohio State scandal and the news is not good for the Buckeyes. Not only will the team lose several scholarships and be banned from post-season play next year, but the school will no longer be permitted to refer to itself as “THE Ohio State University,” and now must resort to using the less descriptive “Ohio State University.”

“They’re taking away our identity,” said university President Gordon Gee. “I understand that we have made mistakes, and that we need to atone for them, but this is harsh. How are we to differentiate between the other Ohio State universities? There is now nothing separating us from Ohio State University Mansfield or Ohio State University Newark.”

While college football experts say the school should recover from the bowl ban and scholarship loss, they believe losing the “The” will have a severe, negative effect on recruiting. “Kids go to Columbus because it’s the only place they can place a definite grammatical article before their school’s name.
