INDIANAPOLIS—Upon hearing of the Colts’ release of franchise quarterback Peyton Manning, Curtis Painter, who took a majority of the snaps for the Colts last season in Manning’s absence, called teammates, staff and assorted members of the media to inform them that he was ready to lead the Colts into the post-Manning era.
“I totally got this,” said a painfully misinformed Painter. “I learned a lot from Peyton and a lot last year, so now I’m ready to be the #1 guy.” Painter, who somehow has no clue that the Colts will be drafting Andrew Luck to be their new franchise quarterback, was fully confident that he’d be under center next fall.
“I won’t let you guys down,” said Painter, which was technically correct, though not in the manner he had intended, as Painter will never be given a chance to do so.
