class="rtejustify"> SAN ANTONIO—Spurs center Tim Duncan used the down time during his free throw attempts to dispense free tax advice to both his teammates and opponents. “You guys should really look into the new tax sheltered saving plans,” Duncan told the men standing around the key waiting for him to shot a free throw. “It’s new this year and while it is aimed at helping middle class Americans save, people who make over $250,000 can also take advantage of the program provided you aren't claiming any additional exemptions on revenue earned from dividends you received from other investments.”

While some players zoned out Duncan’s tax tips, which he has been dispensing every January for the past several seasons, others, such as opposing player and Polish-born Marcin Gortat, welcomed the financial advice. “I am not very familiar with the American tax system,” said Gortat. “So I relish the opportunity to play against the Spurs and find out some tips and tricks to use on my returns this year.”

For notorious nice guy Duncan, it’s all part of his passion. “I picked up a copy of the updated tax codes during a road trip a few years back and was just captivated,” explained Duncan as he dribbled at the foul line. “Ever since, I make sure to check out the changes and share them with my teammates and any of the other guys who are willing to listen.” Duncan sank his second free thrown, ran back up the floor expressionless before adding, “What’s cooler than saving money on your taxes, right guys?”
