Earlier this week, CBS approved the script for a Super Bowl ad involving Tim Tebow and his mother, Pam. The spot, sponsored by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, will reportedly tell the story of how Pam became ill while pregnant during a mission trip in the Philippines. Doctors encouraged her to abort the child out of fear for her own safety, but she decided against it because of her strong beliefs in preserving life and ended up giving birth to Tim.
Well, since the message has strong pro-choice overtones, there were bound to be some critics. And, as discussed in this New York Daily News article, several women’s groups have already come out against the commercial, arguing that it is an advocacy ad; CBS has denied all such ads in the past.
NY Daily News: “Several women’s groups have argued that the spot, which is believed to be a pro-life ad featuring Tebow and his mother, is an advocacy ad and is inappropriate for Super Sunday.
“An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year - an event designed to bring Americans together,” said Jehmu Greene, president of the New York-based Women’s Media Center.
Also joining Women’s Media Center in the protest are the National Organization for Women and the Feminist Majority.”
Tebow, though, does not seem to care what his critics say, as Andy Staples writes. He is not afraid to hide from his beliefs or crummy throwing mechanics, regardless of what some people will think.
Tebow’s take on the controversy: "I don't feel like I'm very preachy about it, but I do stand up for what I believe," Tebow said. "Unfortunately, in today's society, not many athletes tend to do that. So I'm just standing for something.”
Even if the ad is truly offensive, though, I doubt it will change Peter King’s mind that Tebow is the heir apparent to Brett Favre as the media’s new favorite football player.
