Trevor Hoffman To Be Demoted?

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Trevor Hoffman is without question one of the greatest closers of all time. Hoffman, now in his 18th season in the majors, is the all-time leader with 594 career saves and has compiled an excellent 2.82 career ERA. Even at 41 years old, the veteran right-hander remained effective in his first season in Milwaukee in 2009, posting an excellent 1.83 ERA while racking up 37 saves.

Season two with the Brewers has not gotten off to a great start for Hoffman, however, as he blew his fourth save in seven chances on Wednesday. For the second consecutive game, he allowed a home run to Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit, costing the lead both times. For those scoring at home, Hoffman has now coughed up six home runs in just nine innings pitched so far in 2010. To put in perspective how high that number is, note that he surrendered just two homers all last season.

Overall, Hoffman's season line is pretty ugly: 9.0 innings pitched, 13 runs, 13 earned runs, 13.00 ERA. The one-time San Diego Padres' icon also has only five strikeouts and his velocity, which was never an issue for him in the past because of the excellent change-up that made him famous, is down considerably. Despite the clear struggles, though, Hoffman has yet to be demoted; given his stature, the task of demoting the future Hall of Fame closer would be no easy task for a manager. As such, Hoffman is still technically the Brewers' closer, but his seat is getting hot. For now, though, Milwaukee manager Ken Macha has decided to give him some time off. In other words, Macha put him on time out. Hence the .gif image.
