So, Brett Favre he ain't.
It only took Tom Izzo nine days to decide that he would rather continue being a living legend in East Lansing than accept an offer to coach the Cleveland LeBrons, er, Cavs. Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert reportedly offered the Michigan State coach a five-year, $30 million contract to leave college hoops in his rearview mirror, more than twice Izzo's current annual salary.
Izzo held a press conference Tuesday evening to announce his plans.
Here's Coach:
"Instead of coaching [young stars] in the NBA, I'm going to coach them in the NCAA. I knew at the beginning that whatever decision I made would be a decision for life. I'm going to be a lifer. This is what I'm going to be, and I'm damn proud of it."
Izzo made the right decision considering that he simply couldn't accept the Cavs job without knowing that LeBron would for sure be a part of the future. And there's no way to know because LeBron isn't going to commit until he absolutely has to, instead using his leverage to build the summer circus of free agency around him. July 1 is the first day that free agents can sign, and that's more than two weeks away.
It would be fair for Izzo to leave the Cavs hanging until then -- after all, the Cavs job is an entirely different one without Lebron -- but it is not fair for Izzo to hang Michigan State out to dry. The university needs to know who the head coach is going to be next fall so it can continue on with its recruiting plans and prepare for another Final Four.
Give credit to Gilbert. He knew he needed to make a coaching "splash" if he wanted to lure LeBron back to Cleveland, and he went hard after Izzo. $30 million is a ton of money. But good for Izzo for putting comfort and his family above chasing every final dollar.
It's partly his humility and perspective that make him so beloved at Michigan State.
Oh, six Final Fours in the last 12 years help, too.
