Tauntr.com Supports Pat Burrell For 2010 American League All-Star Designated Hitter

The Tampa Bay Rays recently designated for assignment veteran designated hitter Pat Burrell. Although the Rays were commended for signing Burrell at what appeared to be a reasonable price during the 2008 offseason, things ultimately did not work out. Essentially, the once consistent right-handed slugger forgot how to hit upon a switch to the American League, falling off a cliff to the tune of a .218/.311/.361 line in two seasons in Tampa Bay.

At the time of the release, Burrell was hitting a measly .202/.292/.333 with just two home runs. Given the terrible output, the Rays’ decision to DFA him was expected. Despite not currently having a team to play for, though, the former Philadelphia Phillie ranks fourth in the A.L. All-Star balloting at the DH position. He currently has 130,265 votes, ranking ahead of Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz. Vladimir Guerrero, who has returned to form with the Texas Rangers, currently has a sizeable lead, with 374,333 votes, but there is still a figthing chance that Burrell could get the call.

We, at tauntr, fully support Burrell’s cause and encourage you to stuff the electronic online ballots—you can vote up to 25 times—in order to get Pat the Bat into the game. For one, even if he signs with another team (he has been linked to the San Francisco Giants, despite his horrible defense), it will be interesting to see what happens if he wins the vote. Or if he does not have a team, what would Major League Baseball do, and would he wear Tampa Bay gear? Perhaps most important, the man had his own MTV cribs-style video and slayed porn stars in his heyday. Lastly, the All-Star game is essentially a joke, and what better way to further cement that fact by having a player whose only responsibility is to hit boast a .625 OPS and get elected as an All-Star? Then perhaps dumb writers will stop using trivial accomplishments like All-Star game appearances when deciding on things such as the Hall of Fame voting.

Vote for Pat today. The Fightins have already supported the cause, but we need more support. It is up to you, America.
