NFL Prospect Who Forked His Sister Goes Undrafted

Remember Tony Washington, the NFL prospect who is a convicted sex offender for having sex with his sister? We covered the story back in March when word broke that scouts were concerned about his character--a major theme of this year's NFL draft coverage in light of the Ben Roethlisbeger scandal--after learning about his sordid past, which included being arrested for essentially banging his sister as a teenager.

Disturbing story here. Pro offensive line prospect Tony Washington, a product of little-known, Division II school Abilene Christian, made a strong impression at the NFL Combine last week. Washington, however, faces an even harder road than most players from smaller schools. You see, scouts are concerned about his background because he was once arrested for having sex with his sister.

Well, despite being considered a mid-round draft talent, Washington was not selected in either day one, two or three of the 2010 NFL Draft and now hopes to sign with a team as a free agent. But the former Abilene Christian star has not even received so much as an invite for a tryout, with his phone remaining silent days after the completion of the draft. And, according to this report from CNBC.com, his agent is quite dissapointed and shocked by the development.

Darren Rovell:

"I'm in complete shock," McElroy said. "I feel so bad for this kid. This is something that happened seven years ago and, probably because of the Roethlisberger situation, he hasn't been called.

"We spent hours of our time, providing letters, testimonials from people to tell this kid's story," McElroy said. "It isn't like he's some pervert hanging around in the bushes. He's a good kid who screwed up, who since then was accepted by the board and admitted to one of the most conservative colleges out there."

McElroy said that "maybe four teams" said they wouldn't draft Washington.

"Other than that, all I heard was, 'Maybe we can't take him early because of the publicity, but we'd consider him in the later rounds,'" he said.

Talent trumps everything when it comes to professional sports, of course, but, for a borderline prospect to begin with, the addition of character concerns that make Dez Bryant seem like a choir boy is indeed a legititmate concern. Thus, after the Big Ben story, the fact that he is not attracting any real interest right now is hardly surprising. The unfortunate mistake will likely continue to cost Washington for the rest of his life, so, if he is truly changed and healed on a mental level, it is sad that he is being blackballed by the league.

Then again, Washington did bang his sister, which is obviously extremely messed up on many different levels.

So, I guess the lesson here is this: those who want to play in the NFL today should not have sex with a sibling.
