NBA Logos On Pizza Only The Beginning

Like any successful business, all major professional sports leagues constantly look for creative ways to increase revenue streams. The NBA recently took its licensing strategy to a new creative extreme, though, announcing its plans to sell the licensing rights of edible team logos to 1,200 independent pizza parlors nationwide. The reason? So that fans can eat pizza with their favorite team’s logo square in the middle.

Seriously.

USA Today:

The logos, to be available next season for all 30 teams, are made of sugar, starch and food coloring. They'll add about $5 to the pizza price.

The logos won't be sold directly to consumers but to some 1,200 independent pizza parlors nationwide. The paper-thin logos come in 12-pack resealable pouches. The image is placed atop the pizza after it has been fully baked and sliced. The logo then melts into the cheese.

"Most Americans don't make it to an NBA game," explains Rick Ellison, the licensee who makes Pizza Fest Edible Image toppings. "This is how they create the experience for themselves."

Back in April, Pangea Brands announced its plans to roll out toasters that burn the logos of most major sports teams in multiple leagues. Thus, the move to pizza for the NBA is hardly surprising. Indeed, according to our exclusive sources, the trend will only continue across all leagues.

If our sources are correct, here is what sports fans can expect on their food next.

Philadelphia is famous for its rowdy sports fans and tasty Cheese Steaks. What better way to improve the deliciousness of a Philly Cheese Steak than to splash a Phillies logo right on top of the meat? Pat’s is apparently planning on releasing the Phillies-logo sandwiches prior to the MLB All-Star break.

Cincinnati is home to the deliciousness that is Skyline Chili. Given the excellence of the Natti’s finest, it would be difficult to make the dish any better. Unless they inserted a Bengals logo into it, that is. The Bengals, and then the Reds, logo will be available on chili orders at all participating Skyline locations at some point this summer.

Up in Red Sox nation, New Englanders will soon be able to tear into some Celtics-themed lobster.

Mashed-potato-loving Yankees fans can get in on the action as well.

Chicago native Barack Obama will enjoy eating some Bulls pasta. The pasta will only help the team's chances of signing LeBron James, too.

Perhaps fittingly, local Arizona taco shops will be using the Cardinals logo on it. However, the Cardinals will be the only NFL team to experiment with the food logo licensing at this point in light of the recent American Needle case ruling.

What will sports marketing executives think of next?

That is clearly not Skyline Chili. It looks far too edible.
