Magic Johnson Agrees With Other 'MJ'

Magic Johnson agrees with Michael Jordan. The man who ran Showtime in Los Angeles wouldn't have chased Jordan or Larry Bird in an attempt to join their team, a la LeBron James with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami this summer.

"From college, I was trying to figure out how to beat Larry Bird," Magic said at a Tuesday morning interview at Baruch College in New York.

These comments came after Jordan announced last week in Lake Tahoe that he wouldn't have went out of his way to call Johnson or Bird and join forces. The only time the trio played together was on the Dream Team, and Jordan even labeled that encounter as something that wasn't that competitive (paraphrasing MJ).

This story line -- along with all others that have to do with LeBron this summer -- has been beaten to death since James announced he was going to join the Heat.

It's a valid argument, but not all teams are created equal. There may be some truth to the comments that LeBron doesn't want the burden of having to be The Man on a championship team, or maybe that he's just not wired to lead a team to a title. I'm not really sure, but those opinions are out there.

But there also is some truth in the fact that LeBron did something that we often WANT our superstars to do -- i.e. give a little back to gain a little more for the team. We sometimes wonder why players don't give up some money and celebrity status in order to win championships, if winning is really what it's all about.

Well, as Colin Cowherd emphasized on ESPN Radio Wednesday, LeBron did just that. Not to mention, Cowherd says, that it's unfair to draw direct comparisons to Magic and MJ as LeBron's Cleveland teams didn't have nearly the supporting cast that the Bulls and Lakers had during their championship runs.

They are all arguable points with some truth, but Magic never answered -- nor was asked, I believe -- the real question I want him to answer.

I'll do the honors: Hey Magic, part of Pat Riley's sales pitch to LeBron was that he said he envisioned the Heat becoming a modern version of your Showtime Lakers if LeBron joined Wade and Bosh in South Beach. Riley told LeBron, among other things, that he thinks LeBron "could be Magic" and recreate the same dynasty the two of you enjoyed in Los Angeles. Do you think LeBron James could be as good as Magic Johnson and how accurate is Riley's pitch?

Follow up question: If LeBron were to dump his long-time girlfriend, does he pull more chicks in South Beach than you pulled in LA?

OK, OK, I'm kidding with the follow up question. Sort of.

But I really do want Magic's take on the initial question. I assume Magic would be thinking, "Sniff my five rings and then lets talk about the young fella."

Which is another way of saying LeBron isn't close to Magic nor MJ, so lets stop that talk.
