Lincecum Settles Pot Charge

Remember when San Francisco Giants star pitcher Tim Lincecum was busted for possession of weed? Well, the case against Lincecum has now been resolved. The reigning two-time National League Cy Young Award winner made a deal with prosecutors this morning to reduce charges of drug paraphernalia and possession to a civil infraction. He’ll now have to pay $513.00 as well as the speeding ticket that led to him being pulled over in the first place.

Seeing as how Lincecum is about to land the highest contract ever given to a first-year arbitration-eligible player—some reports suggest that his representation could ask for $23-M in hearings—I don’t think that paying the fine will be much of an issue. Then again, Kenny Britt couldn’t pay for his traffic violations on time, so who knows?

It’s worth pointing out that Lincecum seemed remorseful for his actions, saying he’ll “try” not to let a similar incident happen again. From where I’m standing, though, the odds of him giving up smoking weed for good are considerably worse than the chances that the diminutive pitcher with the unorthodox mechanics eventually breaks down and gets injured. And, considering that he’s never had a sore arm a day in his life, that’s definitely saying a lot.

Virtual Tim Lincecum, by the way, was reportedly at the hearing to show support for his mentor.
