There seems to be a consensus among football fans and personnel that Jeff Ireland's quetion to Dez Bryant during a pre-draft interview--"is your mother a prostitute?"--was out of line. Most journalists who cover the sport and former coaches and players, including known tough guy Mike Ditka, were rightfully appalled that Ireland would ask such a question even to a draft prospect with reported character concerns.
Indeed, while it is understandable that organizations would want to really dig deep into the backgrounds of potential future players, Ireland's actions were simply unacceptable. In this instance, he practically came just short of telling Bryant that his mother sucks c*cks in hell, Excorcist-style. And his apology and well wishes for Bryan'ts NFL career, which only came after Yahoo! Sports outed him as the NFL executive who asked the classless question, fell on deaf ears to many even though Bryant accepted it. The talented former Oklahoma State wide receiver, who was selected in the first round by the Dallas Cowboys, is only taking the high road.
On the other hand, we at Tauntr would have had no problem if Bryant whacked Ireland in the face upon hearing the question. It is easy to see why he did not so, as it could have negatively affected his draft status. While some may have legitimates questions about his character (he would not make this squad, that is for sure), though, he deserves to be commended for his ability to withhold restraint in that situation. Seriously, imagine if you were going for a job interview and an HR employee posed the same question. Odds are, you would probably decline any offer and look for work elsewhere, even in a down econony.
One thing is certain, though: Ireland makes it easy to root against the Dolphins.
