The San Francisco Giants on Monday night hosted "Jerry Garcia Night" at AT&T Park. The promotion to honor the 15th anniversary of Garcia's death was a smashing success, attracting thousands of fans to the ballpark who otherwise would not have attended. Overall, it turned out to be a truly great night for the Giants. Not only did San Francisco outfielder Pat Burrell lead the team to a big win over the Cubs in walk-off fashion, the organization nearly set a Guinness World Record for largest Kazoo Ensemble.
Hoping to set the record, the Giants passed out kazoos to 7,000 fans, as well as Garcia bobble heads (now going for just under $60.00 on eBay), as part of the promotion. Then, during the seventh-inning stretch, basketball legend Bill Walton, a huge "Dead Head," and the remaining living Grateful Dead band members led the crowd in a kazoo rendition of Take Me Out To The Ballgame.
The reviews of the performancehave been mixed, but I agree with Deadspin. Seeing Walton at all, especially rocking a Grateful Dead Giants shirt, was all kinds of win as far as I am concerned. As was the Giants' original idea behind the "Jerry Garcia Night" promotion. The only complaint here, though, was that known pot head and tauntr's favorite baseball player, back-to-back National League Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum, was not scheduled to toe the rubber. Instead, San Francisco lefty Madison Bumgarner took the hill, leaving Lincecum on the bench, where he could direct his focus on hanging with Mickey Hart and Bill Kruetzman.
For those TimmyandBus fans, make sure to check tauntr soon to see what really went down on "Jerry Garcia Night."
