ESPN scrapes the bottom of the barrel on Steinbrenner anecdotes, interviews fan who saw Oscar Gamble play once
BRISTOL, CT — On what may be the slowest sports day of the year, ESPN, the leading 24-hour cable sports network, has decided to milk the death of George Steinbrenner story for all it is worth. 24 hours after news broke of his passing, ESPN is still tracking down people to interview about their thoughts on the legendary owner of the New York Yankees. “At first it made sense,” said Yankees fan Darrell Tompkins. “They interviewed guys like Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, Joe Girardi. Yankees greats and the current manager. All makes sense. But later in the day I saw they were interviewing Dick Vitale. What does Dick Vitale have to do with George Steinbrenner? I mean, what does that numbskull even have to do with the game of baseball? Absolutely nothing. He has as much to do with baseball as I do. It’s ridiculous.” After some highlights of last night’s Major League Baseball All-Star game, ESPN went right back for more Steinbrenner anecdotes, this time from a fan who claims to have went to a Yankees game in the 1970s and saw Oscar Gamble play once. Reportedly ESPN is considering putting cyanide in Muhammad Ali’s tea this evening if sports news doesn’t pick up by mid afternoon.
