Veteran starting pitcher Carl Pavano was the butt of many jokes during a nightmare run with the New York Yankees. Limited by a comic amount of injuries, Pavano won just nine games after signing a four-year, $39.5-million contract with the Yankees. Since then, though, the 34-year-old right-hander has actually managed to pitch quite well between his time with the Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins. Finally healthy, he has gotten off to a strong first-half start for the Twins in 2010. After outdueling Philadelphia Phillies stud Roy Halladay on Sunday, Pavano is 8-6 with a 3.64 ERA and 116 ERA+ in 14 starts. In addition to being healthy for once, a lot of his recent success can be attributed to his sweet porn star mustache, which could make him a candidate for the American Mustache Insitute’s ’10 Athlete of the Year. At the least, he should be named AMI’s Comeback Athlete of the Year for taking the Twins on a worthwhile mustache ride.
