Calipari sends $1M to Haiti, rescues one 7’ Haitian boy
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of Kentucky basketball team and head coach John Calipari were praised by President Barak Obama Tuesday for raising $1 million in their “Hoops for Haiti” telethon. Calipari will travel to Haiti tomorrow to deliver the money to the nation as they recover from natural disaster. The cash will be paid to a single family and in return their 16-year-old boy, Jean Louis, will be allowed to come to America. “We can’t rescue everyone,” said Calipari. “But we’re just happy we were able to save one 7-foot tall phenom from the rubble.” Calipari, current and past players answered phones to take bids on UK basketball memorabilia in an effort to bolster their recruiting class and, if any money was left over, a little relief to the nation as they rebuild from the disaster. “If there is anyone else in Haiti who needs help,” Calipari said, “and has great shot-blocking skills, please let the Kentucky Wildcats know. We’ll be there.”
