New Jersey Nets new Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov has big plans for the team. Prokhorov, who has a net worth of $13.4 billion and is ranked by Forbes as the 39th richest man in the world, hopes to transform the Nets franchise into a global brand while “turning Knicks fans into Nets fans." Given the team’s decade of futility and recent struggles both at the draft lottery and on the court, both tasks seem like a tall order. If everything goes according to schedule in the 44-year-old billionaire’s five-year plan to turn the team into a consistent contender, though, each could very well happen.

When, and if, a transformation from laughingstock to contender occurs, though, the team may no longer be called the Nets. Instead, it could adopt a Russian-inspired name. Speaking to reporters at the Four Seasons Hotel in Manhattan earlier this week, Prokhorov joked about renaming the team. He even asked the media for advice.

NY Daily News: Minutes after telling reporters that he is not inviting Kiki Vandeweghe back after his contract expires on June 30, the Nets' Russian owner asked the press to help him come up with a new nickname for his team.

"Let me ask you some questions," Prokhorov said to a small group of reporters during a private brunch meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel in Manhattan. "What about the name of the team? Is it okay, the Nets? Or do we have to try to find something new?

"I'm a foreigner, you know," he said. "I need your piece of advice. I can put Russian name and nobody knows what it is. I can put the name of a girlfriend and every time I change, I need to change the name of the team.”

While Prokhorov was clearly joking, it didn’t stop tauntr’s in-house gif expert from having a little fun with that quote. Seriously, can you imagine if he changes the name to the New Jersey (or perhaps eventually, Brooklyn) Olgas? Or Natalias. Or Staceys.
