Dontrelle Willis: The HeistAccording to many, the Detroit Tigers are expected to release left-hander Dontrelle Willis before the end of spring training. Willis has been effective this spring, but his fastball has yet to surpass 90 MPH and he has still had command issues. If the Tigers do indeed release the D-Train, then the three-year, $29-million extension given to him after he was acquired from the Florida Marlins will look to be one of the worst contracts in recent memory. Willis, a former All-Star, has gone just 1-6 with an 8.27 ERA in 15 starts since signing the deal. The end result was not exactly surprising, though, as his strikeout rate had worsened his final three seasons with the Marlins, as did his stuff, and he was moving to the superior American League. As such, one can safely label what his agent, Matt Sosnick, was able to do for him in getting that contract as a heist.
